Choose terrace furniture in a bold color to give old chairs a new look. Metal furniture can be sprayed in similar tones, and planters in the same color help create a clear scheme. Red, pink, and orange work especially well against a lawn. A tall sculpture, playground equipment, a garden wall, a shed, or the front of the house can also become a strong color accent. The best advice is to choose one main color, because too many colors can quickly make the garden look chaotic.

A fountain, pond, or swimming pool can also carry color. In a small garden, colored glass can add interest around a fountain, while a pool can be finished with red tiles. Strong colors also combine beautifully with plants and flowers. Dark blue feels close to nature and suits modern minimalist gardens. Red creates an exotic look and works well with palms or conifers, while violet adds a romantic Mediterranean note. Instead of defaulting to brown and green, experiment with orange and yellow.
