Take a look at these nine destinations: they are some of the world's most popular tourist attractions, but over time they have increasingly become tourist traps. At the top of the list of destinations you may be better off avoiding are the Pyramids of Giza. They are undoubtedly among the most famous monuments in the world. As the only surviving monument from the original Seven Wonders of the World, they attract more than 14 million tourists each year. But the reality is that the pyramids no longer offer much additional value for curious tourists. Fast-food restaurants such as Pizza Hut and KFC certainly do not fit the ancient surroundings. The incredible number of tourists, the lack of care, the dirt, and the difficulty of taking a decent picture of the pyramids are determining factors when deciding whether you really want to visit.
Overestimated top destinations – the Statue of Liberty in New York
Everyone knows the large statue in New York, which was given to the Americans by France in 1886. To this day, it remains a symbol of freedom and is considered the face of New York City. As one of America's most popular destinations, the Statue of Liberty is certainly a tourist magnet. Many tourists are tempted to climb the 354 steps to the top of the statue. But is it worth it? The climb takes about 30 minutes, during which you have to get used to the confined space. When you reach the top, you have very little time to enjoy the view of New York before the next tourist groups are already pushing forward.
Overestimated top destinations – Niagara Falls, Ontario
Niagara Falls is located between New York and Ontario, Canada. The waterfalls are certainly very impressive and beautiful. They truly deserve a place on the list of top destinations. Like the pyramids, however, the area around Niagara Falls no longer looks as natural as it once did. Today, the results of marketing efforts to popularize the waterfalls are clearly visible. Wax museums, food services, casinos, and other unnecessary buildings take away much of the charm of this beautiful natural wonder.
