Hokkaido Garden Path is a 200 km long garden route. It begins in Asahikawa and guides visitors through Furano and Tokachi, where they can visit beautiful gardens with 1,000 different types of flowers and trees. "Tokachi Hills" was originally used as a greenhouse for growing vegetables. The building is located on a small hill on the Tokachi plain in Japan and was renovated by the Japanese architectural firm Nadamoto Yukiko Architects. The new design includes a modern garden, a gift shop, a cafe and access to the large garden. The different zones are visually separated within a large open space, yet united by organically shaped cutouts in the floor. Beautiful plantings add color and charm to the room.
A modern garden integrated into the cafe
Before the renovation, the architects described the existing space this way: "paving stones were just placed on the fertile soil, and two trees quietly stood in a corner where commercial wares were being sold." At that time, the exposed structure had been repainted several times, but the colorful layers distracted visitors from its simplicity and beauty.
Contemporary gardens contrast with the white walls
During the renovation, the building was painted pure white from floor to ceiling, allowing the planted foliage to stand out against the walls. This modern garden strengthened the relationship between "Tokachi Hills" and the surrounding garden.
