The source of inspiration for this striking suspended staircase was a new installation by Do Ho Suh, an artist who has shown work at Tate Modern in London. His project, called "Staircase-III" is a staircase suspended from the ceiling with 12 steps. It is not intended for everyday use, but is executed with a purely sculptural aesthetic. Do Ho Suh’s idea inspired Slide Design to create something unique and functional.
Transparent Suspended Staircase
The first step is choosing appropriate materials. They must be light, stable and robust. To meet the needs of each client and significantly reduce the weight, the design team created a contemporary staircase from perforated sheet steel, making the structure visible through the holes on all sides.
Stair Railing Design With a Membrane-Like Structure
The suspended staircase measures 5 x 4 m and was designed with transparent balustrades made of sheet steel. The sheets are laser-cut so the structure can be read as a single unit. The stair elements are fixed to each other in advance and then mounted to the ceiling. The glass ceiling and steel beams allow the steel frame to appear to float above the floor. The bright red design makes it a showpiece.
The Look Is Fashionably Reduced
The light staircase casts little shadow, takes up little space and is a real eye-catcher. The contemporary "upside-down" design recalls the timeless art of M. C. Escher.
