A modern house with a wooden facade is integrated into its garden setting. The project, known as Tree House, was designed by the London studio 6a Architects as an addition to a historic pair of 1830s weavers' cottages.

Architecture

The so-called Tree House – a single-story house with a wooden facade – was designed by 6a Architects to add living space while respecting the existing garden. The project had to work around a mature sumac tree, so the timber-clad volume curves gently through the site rather than forcing a rigid plan.

Thanks to its dark timber cladding, the building fits naturally into the landscape. The facade curves around the large tree in the garden. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring plenty of light inside, while sliding glass doors open the house toward the greenery. On the more private side, the architects reduced openings to protect the family's privacy.

An accessible glass ramp connects the living room in the main building with the new garden structure. Inside the one-story timber-fronted extension, a room and bathroom are arranged with a quiet, simple interior. White walls make the rooms feel brighter and more spacious, while a black bookcase in the hallway displays the family's favorite books.

A wooden deck offers a place to relax outdoors and enjoy the traditional English garden in fine weather. A high fence protects the property from prying eyes, and a short path leads to the secluded garden room.

6a Architects is known in the UK for thoughtful cultural and residential projects, particularly galleries and renovations. Tree House is a careful example of how an old building can be modernized without losing the character of its garden.
