Conceived by creative director Marc Atlan in collaboration with the architectural firm Oller & Pejic, "The Black Desert House" is a modern black house with expansive views toward Joshua Tree National Park in California. The single-story home is a minimalist and distinctive desert retreat, designed around changing views of color, light and shadow.
Modern black house in the desert
Centered around an exterior courtyard, the kitchen and dining area form the heart of the interior. A small staircase leads down to a sunken living room, where floor-to-ceiling windows frame the impressive desert terrain. Black walls, midnight quartz, glossy anthracite surfaces and darkened steel create a dramatic backdrop for carefully selected flashes of color.

In the southeastern part of the property, three bedrooms open onto a pool lined with black tile. The adjacent terrace is sheltered between the house and a rock formation. At night, the rocks are gently illuminated from below.
Stairs to the front door
Although it sits within reach of nearby desert towns, the serene atmosphere makes residents and guests feel removed from the pace of city life. Black Desert House is also used professionally for fashion shoots, advertising campaigns, and film and television production.
