Cherokee Square Park in Guthrie, Kentucky is being renovated. The new project for the city park includes new lighting, the construction of hundreds of seats and the renovation of old theater infrastructure. What may sound ordinary at first is in fact a new concept that could influence city parks around the world.
City Park Proposal – a combined seating, planting and lighting installation

The city park is the work of the design workshop Takebayashi Scroggin and was recently presented to the public. A modern system would be installed in the center of the park and assembled from different elements. Each element combines a slightly twisted garden bench with a vertical planting feature. Succulents or trees can be planted in the structure, adding shade and greenery. LED lighting is also integrated into the system so residents and visitors can enjoy long summer evenings outdoors. It is made of plastic, a durable material able to withstand heat, rain and frost.
The different modules can be connected or installed as independent units throughout the park. They have clean lines and a minimalist look, qualities associated with the design studio. The model was presented recently; once planted and landscaped, the plastic modules should feel much softer and more inviting.
