Each piece in Maarten De Ceulaer’s "Mutation" furniture series is unique. The designer furniture by the Belgian designer is made from soft upholstery-foam spheres in different sizes and appears in a variety of simple shapes. To hold the spheres together, De Ceulaer coats them with rubber or a velvet-like finish that gives the surface its distinctive texture, look and feel.

A mutation is, by definition, a permanent change in a cell’s genome that is passed on to daughter cells. De Ceulaer’s "Mutation" series borrows from the idea of biological units multiplying like bubbles and developing unexpected forms. Recreating one of these furniture designs is almost impossible: the pieces do not look as if they were built by hand, but as if they had grown on their own. Maybe one day we will be able to grow our own furniture.
