Heather plants are hardy plants for balconies, and they cope well with cold weather. Winter heath, also known as snow heath, is especially popular. It can be planted on the balcony in October and should be watered regularly, even in winter, so the root ball does not dry out completely.
Dwarf conifers are evergreen, hardy plants that can remain on the balcony all year round. They are often planted from November through late April, as long as the containers are not frozen. They like sunny places, so south-facing balconies are usually a good fit.

Strawberry plants are also hardy balcony plants. They are easy to maintain and can often be left outside all year round. In winter, strawberries do not need much water, but the soil should be checked about every two weeks and watered lightly if it is dry. The plants can also be covered for extra protection.
