Houghton 6th 1448 is a modern dream home in an affluent suburb of Johannesburg. SAOTA – Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects – worked with Antoni Associates to design this exclusive home. The architects were asked to create a residence for a large family. The house sits on a gently sloping site surrounded by trees.

The site was divided into two separate volumes arranged around a shared entrance and driveway, which gives access to two homes. Both houses have a U-shaped plan around a courtyard, with easy access to the living areas and the pool.

Inside, the rooms are organized around a central spiral staircase. The living rooms, kitchen, and courtyard face north, while the games room, swimming pool, and gym are positioned to the west. All of these areas connect to the courtyard, bringing them back to the main house. The bedroom and home office are upstairs. The passage to the children’s bedrooms runs along a perforated wall that separates the building from the entrance.

Antoni Associates was responsible for creating a modern interior that reflects the family’s lifestyle. The decor and furnishings are contemporary, with strong lines that complement the linear architecture. A series of custom furniture pieces was designed by OKHA. Neutral tones with color accents are used throughout. Expressive rugs add drama and texture to the rooms. Art by South African artists, including Lyndi Sales and Philip Barlow, appears throughout.
