In the hands of Mister Finch, a Leeds-based textile artist, fabric becomes birds, rabbits, insects, fungi, and flowers with a fairytale edge. Each creature is sewn stitch by stitch. Mister Finch works with yarn, fabric, paper, and found scraps, often reusing vintage textiles. Worn velvet curtains, old wedding dresses, aprons, and other forgotten materials are stitched together and transformed into fantastical creatures. Their recycled surfaces make them feel as if they already carry stories.
Mister Finch – a master of textile art
Mister Finch works alone in a studio filled with books, glass jars, and cats. He is self-taught, and each piece is made by hand. Nature is his main inspiration: flowers, insects, birds, nests, life cycles, and unusual behavior all feed his imagination. British folklore, with its strange and shadowy stories, remains another rich source for his work.
Sewn art carries us into a fairytale world
His creatures feel as though they have stepped out of folklore. Shape-shifting witches, watchful moon hares, elegantly dressed figures, and forest animals in shoes and clothes all seem ready to wake after dark. Part fairytale and part gentle unease, these hand-sewn decorative objects have a memorable charm.
