The Victorian garden was known for elegant design and beautiful garden paths with flowers. You can borrow ideas from English gardens by using hardy plants and shrubs as a visual boundary between flower beds and garden paths. These plants are easy to maintain and can mark the transition between a concrete walkway and the softer, natural areas of the garden.

Rectangular flower beds and shrubs give the garden a sculptural appearance. Tall grasses and shrubs can also be used as accents, helping define different areas. Fans of Japanese style can refresh a rock garden with red ornamental grass. The combination of Japanese trees, grasses, and stones can be especially effective.

A Mediterranean or country-style garden should look natural and fresh, so the choice of flowers plays an important role. Tulips and other flowering plants are ideal for country-style garden design. A garden path with flowers can complement the overall concept beautifully.

Smart combinations of stone slabs, gravel paths, and large flowers are sure to delight guests. Climbing plants can beautify the garden fence, especially when the path runs next to it. Potted plants can also be used as a boundary. In winter, they can be moved into the house or a sheltered garden area, then reused as summer accents. Fountains and statues can also serve as decorative features. With a little skill and imagination, you can divide the garden and give each area a clear purpose.
