Japanese architect Ryo Matsui answered that question with Balcony House in Tokyo, a four-floor private house completed in 2013. The project uses simple forms, natural materials and generous openings to create a close relationship between indoors and outdoors while fitting harmoniously into its urban setting.

Balcony House is located in Minato-ku, Tokyo, where space is a real luxury. Wide openings, planted balconies and a roof terrace blur the boundary between inside and outside. Simple at first glance, the family home extends over four floors and offers privacy as well as views of the city. The building has about 203 m2 of floor area. Lower levels accommodate parking and private rooms, while the kitchen, dining area and living room are placed above. The upper level opens onto a generous roof terrace overlooking the neighborhood. Warm wood tones soften the interior.
