This old wine cellar has been transformed with inspired design into an attractive contemporary project.
The Old Wine Cellar: A Unique Harmony Between Old and New
Architect Wolfgang Wimmer and the Austrian design studio March Gut, led by Christoph March and Marek Gut, worked together on the year-long renovation and expansion of a former wine cellar in Austria’s Wagram region. The building now unfolds across four levels. The oldest parts were preserved and restored to recall the original character, while new spaces give the structure the function of both wine cellar and showroom. Below ground are storage and wine-presentation areas; the ground floor is used for tastings; the first floor accommodates food service and terraces; and the top floor includes a temporary bedroom. The winery can therefore also offer overnight accommodation to interested visitors.
The Old Cellar: Experience and Enjoy Wine Culture
The concept responds to viticulture and to the different uses of each level through carefully chosen materials, forms and colors. The winery becomes a refined setting focused on the experience of wine. The cellar feels intimate, with muted light, acoustic softness and a comfortable atmosphere, while the first floor is brighter and more open, with generous views directly toward the vineyards. Although the building has a limited floor area, the careful use of available heights and construction zones makes it feel spacious. It is an appealing destination for wine lovers who want to experience the atmosphere and tradition of this wine region.
