Tips for proper care of the plants in the winter garden

On cold winter days, many plants are best kept in a conservatory or winter garden. A conservatory brings a small piece of nature into the home, protects sensitive plants from frost and often becomes a pleasant place to relax. It can serve as a bright lounge where you read, listen to music or enjoy dinner surrounded by greenery. Furniture matters, but the choice of plants plays the leading role. Choose species you enjoy and can care for properly. A winter garden can give orchids, palms, ferns, citrus plants and other foliage plants a beautiful stage.

Which plants belong in the winter garden?

Plants in the greenhouse or conservatory need the same basic care as in summer: watering, feeding, pruning and regular inspection. Winter gardens are often decorated with tropical and subtropical plants such as palms, climbing plants, ficus, ferns and citrus. Warmth, light and humidity allow these plants to grow well throughout the year. In their natural regions, many can reach impressive sizes, so it is important to create an environment that suits their needs and gives them enough space.

Place plants in the winter garden carefully

Many plants in the greenhouse suffer less from neglect than from too much care, especially too much water. Standing water can cause root rot. In winter, a hygrometer is useful because humidity changes with temperature. Many plants also appreciate having their leaves wiped or misted with suitable water. As a general rule, let the top layer of soil dry slightly before watering again, and never leave pots sitting in a full saucer for long.

Good lighting and heating are essential

A conservatory should be arranged so plants receive enough light. Glass walls and ceilings help, but the position of each plant still matters. If leaves fade or turn yellow, the plant may need more light. Flowering species usually need the brightest places near windows, while plants with dark, fleshy leaves often tolerate more shade. Window seats can become warm, but a cold stone floor or sill can damage roots, so use stands or coasters made of wood, cork, raffia or another insulating material. Drafts can also cause serious damage.
