Andrew Beck redesigned the garden of a house in Perth, Australia. After the renovation, the courtyard was in a deplorable state, and Beck was asked to turn it back into a charming oasis. He created a space-saving garden design with three vertical gardens, which are not only aesthetic but also practical. Let yourself be inspired!
Idyllic outdoors – vertical gardens
Instead of lush plantings, he chose vertical gardens. The landscape designer focused on moving away from the traditional look of a garden project. The existing brick wall was elegantly staged. Its warm reddish-brown tone was complemented by elongated planters made of oxidized copper and coated with a waterproof membrane. Here, Beck tried to use natural materials with a low impact on the environment. Hanging flower pots helped transform the once-unpleasant courtyard with water tanks into a decorative garden.
Vertical gardens – Inspiration from Australia
To respond flexibly to the client's wishes, Beck took the practical purpose of the vertical gardens into account as well. They are known for their benefits: they affect the microclimate and can serve as partitions. That is exactly the case here: a vertical garden also works as a privacy screen for the outdoor shower.
Garden design and upcycling go hand in hand
For the planting, Beck chose 50% native species, along with vines and succulents. The sunny position requires regular watering, so Beck designed an economical irrigation system. Smooth stones, river pebbles and terracotta vessels, with water gently rippling through them, complete the garden's idyllic atmosphere.
