Chair design that looks like a wood carving
For Ryder Architecture, design is a process for solving fundamental problems, while still pursuing quality in every detail. Chair design by Ryder combines timeless beauty, elegance and function. Janus Chairs are three very large, comfortable rotating seats with a sheltering form. Installed in 2009 at Kielder Water and Forest Park in Northumberland, North East England, they sit on the banks of one of Europe’s largest man-made lakes, surrounded by England’s largest forest.

The chair design Janus was inspired by nature, especially flower petals unfolding toward the sun. Like petals, the three chairs are arranged in stages. Laminated Douglas fir was used for the structure, with stainless steel backs. The attractive chairs can be turned toward a favorite view, toward one another, or away from wind and weather.

Seen from different points of view, the chairs read as both seating and wooden sculpture, fitting organically into the natural environment. Who would not want a striking chair design like this at home? It would certainly become a popular place for the whole family.
