The important thing is that the plants receive direct sun and are protected from strong wind.

Vegetables on the balcony – space-saving raised beds

Are you already looking forward to summer, when you can grow delicious vegetables on the balcony? Start now by choosing tubs, boxes, and planters. Peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and many bean varieties can be planted successfully in containers. A single container should hold at least 12 to 15 liters of soil. These vegetables prefer a sunny, sheltered balcony. An 80 x 100 x 30 cm raised bed can hold a surprising number of salad plants. When planning the balcony layout, pay attention to the total weight, because containers filled with soil become heavy and every balcony has a load limit.

Planting vegetables on the balcony – planning begins in winter

Once you have chosen balcony boxes and tubs, selected the vegetables, and learned about their care, you can begin planning. It is especially useful to start in winter. Tomatoes, for example, can be started on a windowsill in March and moved to the balcony when spring weather is warm enough. If you grow vegetables from seed, label each container. It is also helpful to create a planting plan and keep a small garden journal so nothing is forgotten.
