KRE House is a modern house with a garage designed for a serious sports-car enthusiast. Japanese architecture firm No.555 Architectural Design Office created the house in Shinagawa, one of Tokyo’s 23 special wards. The most striking feature is a custom car lift that raises the owner’s favorite car into the living room.

The client gave the architects several unusual requests: garage space for nine cars, a large tree, and the ability to bring a favorite car into the living room. Because the project site could not comfortably accommodate these demands in a conventional layout, the house was conceived as one large living room. The basement became a spacious garage, and the owner’s black Lamborghini can be lifted into the living area by a custom-made elevator. When the lift is lowered, a movable wooden floor closes over the opening.

Rooms of different heights and sizes are placed randomly within the great hall. Light steel-structure boxes hang from, or attach to, the reinforced-concrete shell, keeping distance from both the car and the large potted tree. These floating volumes create an open living area, while the spaces beneath them have invisible boundaries and different functions according to their height.
