Wine barrels can become fantastic wooden planters for flowers, lasting season after season without losing their beauty. This DIY project transforms an ordinary wine barrel into a blooming planter. It has four levels and six planting areas, with nine triangles creating clearly separated sections. You can plant perennials or succulents, or use the space for growing strawberries.
Building a wooden planter from an old wine barrel

For the wooden planter you need: half a wine barrel, 2 wood strips measuring 1 x 15 x 66 cm, 7 wood strips measuring 1 x 10 x 25-30 cm (length varies with the angled corners), a jigsaw, saw, cordless screwdriver and drill, tape measure, wood screws, and string (optional).
Wooden planter with three levels

Step One: Use a tape measure to divide the barrel into three sections and mark where you need to cut to create the three main levels. You can also use string as a guide so the barrel is divided evenly.

Step Two: Measure the front where you need to cut, about 30 centimeters down, and mark the second level about 15 centimeters lower toward the back. Mark all areas to be cut.

Step Three: Use a saw to carefully cut through the wooden staves.

Step Four: Once you have made the vertical cuts, measure the diameter of the barrel (about 66 cm) and cut the wood slats to follow the curve. Fasten them with wood screws as shown.

Fifth step: Drill drainage holes in the bottom, two for each main level. To create the six planting areas, you can also use planks from an old pallet. The larger boards form the main levels, while the smaller pieces form the triangles. Attach the triangles with wood screws and secure the three main levels with additional screws.

Step Six: Fill your new wooden planter with soil and add your favorite plants!
