Designed in 1969 by the avant-garde Italian designer Gaetano Pesce for B&B Italia, the UP5_6 has stood the test of time and become an icon of Italian furniture design. The designer chair with ottoman has anthropomorphic forms that recall ancient fertility figures, while the attached spherical ottoman evokes a ball and chain. The result is both comfortable seating and a powerful image of constraint, often associated with Pesce’s commentary on the condition of women.

The generous dimensions remain part of the chair’s sculptural identity, while different finishes and colors give the design very different moods. Whether upholstered in a single color or a more expressive palette, the lounge chair with ottoman keeps its unmistakable silhouette. Pesce’s willingness to experiment with materials, color, and form helped the design remain relevant for decades.
