This old schoolhouse in Chicago, United States, was built in 1880 and transformed by Sullivan, Goulette & Wilson into a comfortable mezzanine apartment for a family of seven. The architects pursued a high level of social and environmental sustainability, so the apartment was built with respect for the environment and designed for durability. The rustic brick building now has a modern design that provides comfort while preserving its traditional charm. The interior has been refreshed with color and rich textiles.

The interior project received approval from the Chicago Green Permit Program, which values a strong commitment to sustainable building technology. All living areas in the penthouse apartment were individually designed by SGW, with existing family furniture redesigned for the new home. Although the interior is more modern, it retains the traditional atmosphere of an old school building.

Existing architectural elements, such as massive brick walls, wooden structures, stairs, beams, and rafters, were used as the basis for creative experiments and presented in a new light.

Wood wall panels, ceilings, and floors create a feeling of security and warmth. The building also integrates geothermal heating and cooling, along with a solar heating system. The environmentally friendly concept is complemented by an extensive green roof.

Carefully designed LED lighting and bright fluorescent systems provide ample light inside, while Solatube skylights bring daylight into the rooms without complicated construction. Kitchen furniture, bathroom details, and doors are custom design solutions made from sustainably harvested bamboo plywood.
