Indian architecture studio Hiren Patel Architects designed The Frill House in Ahmedabad. The flat-roof house, completed in 2012, is the result of careful climate-conscious planning and fits naturally into its lush landscape. The design brings together modern lines, traditional Indian outdoor living, and a close relationship with the garden.
Flat-Roof House in India with a Modern Interior
The architects use clear geometric forms to give the house a strong, sculptural presence. Inside, contemporary furniture, Indian colors, art objects, and natural materials create a warm and refined atmosphere. Wood, stone, and abundant daylight from floor-to-ceiling glazing support the feeling of comfort in the flat-roof house, while deep verandas and planted gardens help temper the Ahmedabad climate. Generous living and dining spaces, bedrooms, a study, and guest and staff areas are organized so each room has its own view of the garden.
Modern Flat-Roof House Surrounded by Nature
With sliding glass elements, the living spaces open broadly to the garden. The house has a flat roof plan that forms a Z, creating separate garden areas to the south and north. The south garden is designed like a small forest, with dense planting that casts cooling shade, while the north garden has a more linear lawn and is shaded by the house during the hotter part of the day. Verandas surrounded by tropical plants and palms invite the residents to relax outdoors.
Glass Walls Give the Rooms Height
The Frill House is a contemporary retreat immersed in nature. Light is central to Hiren Patel Architects' approach: high ceilings, broad glass openings, and carefully placed verandas connect the rooms to the gardens without exposing them to harsh sun. Traditional accessories, original paintings, and art objects bring life to the interior, while the carefully chosen materials create a calm, friendly atmosphere.
