Rierson-Salmons Cabin by Salmela Architect is a 2012 project that reused existing foundations from an earlier structure. Those foundations helped determine the new design and reduced disturbance to the rocky site. The cube-shaped house on a slope is equipped with modern amenities. Strictly geometric on the outside yet warm and comfortable within, the cabin offers a distinctive way to live close to nature on a steep Lake Superior shoreline.

This modern house on a hill combines an environmentally conscious construction concept with breathtaking views and natural ventilation. Located in Tofte, Minnesota, United States, the cabin measures 1372 ft2, or about 127 m2. From the terrace, guests can enjoy the relaxed beauty of Lake Superior’s North Shore.

The cube-shaped cabin provides generous living space for a large family and their friends. Perched on a granite outcrop, it overlooks Lake Superior and the original cabin below. Existing foundations from an earlier garage were reused for the new guest house. After a defunct wind generator was removed, its triangular concrete plinth became the base for an outdoor masonry fireplace and seating area. The result is a generous outdoor setting with a beautiful view of the rocky shore.
Both structures offer excellent views
The interior is arranged across several levels and opens to nature. The ground level contains the kitchen, living and dining areas, along with a bedroom, bathroom and mechanical room. Upstairs are a gathering room, master bedroom, bathroom and sauna, while the loft level leads to the roof terrace. High ceilings and skylights support passive summer cooling, and the paved roof provides extra space for relaxing or entertaining.
The house in the woods blends harmoniously with nature
Floor-to-ceiling windows strengthen the connection between indoors and outdoors. The living room opens onto the wooden deck, and the warm wood surfaces inside balance the crisp exterior geometry. Triple glazing, super-insulated walls and thermal-bridge-free foundation details support minimal energy consumption. The new garage was designed as a structure for future solar panels.
