When crocuses brighten meadows and lawns with their beautiful purple flowers, you know spring is coming. These small, sturdy bulb flowers bloom twice a year: once at the end of winter and once in fall. Crocus bulbs are easy to find at garden markets and are very simple to plant. Once placed in the soil, crocuses need little further care and bloom again every year. Crocuses in flower pots, however, need a few conditions to feel comfortable.
Keep crocuses blooming beautifully
Crocuses grown in flower pots add a touch of color to your home and create a fresh spring atmosphere. Crocus bulbs are planted in fall in loose, well-drained soil. A mixture of one-third garden soil, one-third compost, and one-third coarse sand is ideal. The pot should then be placed in a cool, dark location at about 4 degrees Celsius. During this period, the bulbs do not require much water, but the soil should be moistened regularly. Once the crocus bulbs begin to sprout, move the flower pot to a lighter but still cool place, for example outdoors. About a month later, when the crocus flowers are ready, bring them inside. They then need a bright spot at around 15 degrees. A few days later, the buds will open. By changing the temperature and the amount of light, it is possible to encourage the plants to bloom earlier.
