Maple knife set changes our perception of knife design
This maple-wood knife set was shown at the 2014 Toronto Interior Design Show by The Federal Inc. The Ottawa-based product design studio approached an ordinary kitchen knife with a renewed aesthetic, encouraging people to look differently at everyday utensils. The design focuses on the element people notice first in a knife: the blade. A good knife should be strong enough for kitchen work, neither too large nor too small, and above all comfortable to hold. Its weight also plays an important role.
Knife set design – simple but distinctive
The designers developed the handle and body from solid maple, leaving a polished metal edge for cutting. The reduced blade size and visual weight give the product its original image. This set of knives, asks us to reconsider the look of an everyday object. The knives were expected to come to market later that year, either as a set of two or as individual pieces. They look unique and are marked by careful, high-quality execution; the main difference between the versions is their size.
