The Building Mon-El by Markus Scherer Architect

In the heart of Bolzano, Markus Scherer Architekt converted the former Croce Bianca hotel into the headquarters of Fri-el Green Power. The client wanted an office that carried the atmosphere and quality of a home rather than a conventional workplace.

The project began with a careful reading of the existing building, which had been altered over time by its hotel use. Later additions were removed where possible, allowing the original structure, load-bearing walls, and facades to become legible again.

A new staircase, rising through the central void on a metal structure, became the main spatial element of the interior. Large roof skylights and transparent elements reinterpret traces of earlier walls, bringing light into the historic shell while keeping the intervention contemporary.

The building sits in Bolzano’s historic centre, on the remains of the old Bishop’s Palace. Scherer’s renovation highlights the valuable parts of the site and integrates new structures with the old fabric in a way that respects the principles of restoration while giving the headquarters a clear modern identity.
