APOLLO Architects & Associates completed the unique architectural house "Arrow" in Tokyo in 2013. The compact two-storey SOHO house combines a residence and photo studio within a long, narrow site. Its minimalist design creates a strong relationship between inside and outside.
Architect-designed house with a refined look
This architect-designed house is a long, narrow building with a pitched roof shaped by the north-side setback regulations. The unusual roof gives Arrow a distinctive exterior and interior character. Inside and out, the house is calm and white. The ground floor contains a photo studio, while the living spaces and main entrance are above. A slit-shaped skylight lets daylight flood the rooms, creating dramatic patterns of light and shadow during the day and offering views of the sky at night.
The architect-designed house combines work and living spaces
The entrance is reached by an exterior stair that fits the overall architectural image. Exterior and interior are defined by contrasts of color and form. Arrow House shows how lifestyle and environment can interact even on a dense urban site. Although the house stands in a crowded residential area, glass facades and carefully framed views make it feel open to its surroundings. Hardwood floors, furniture and accessories give the rooms individual character.
Minimalist house in Tokyo
The house has a total floor area of 84.22 square metres. Its open plan gives the interior a clear, light and contemporary look. A small loft provides additional flexible space. The rhythmic repetition of diagonal architectural elements throughout the building creates an elegant atmosphere with what the architect described as a comfortable unease.
