Is it an aqueduct, or perhaps the Colosseum in Rome?   In fact, it is a design hotel. La Plage d’Hotel du Pacifique is a project by Kristin Green and was documented while still under construction. The concrete structure appeared in a striking photographic series by Australian photographer Peter Bennetts. His images make the building look like an ancient ruin, set among native pandanus and rosewood trees.

House & Hotel Design

This design hotel is located on a beach in Vanuatu, an island nation in the South Pacific more than a thousand miles east of northern Australia. The Pacific Beach Hotel includes 18 guest villas and offers a quiet retreat for travelers looking for peace, privacy, and beautiful natural surroundings. The plan also includes a restaurant with a roof garden, a sunroom, a pool, and a spa. The project was nearing completion when these images were taken.

The coast is exposed to constant trade winds and frequent cyclones, so the buildings need a strong, protective structure. Concrete became the main material for the villas and hotel facilities. Antique-looking arcades and lattice-like screens create an unusual mix of architectural references that might even surprise Escher. Thick concrete walls protect against wind and provide generous shade on the hottest days.

Kristin Green’s concrete villas are tailored to the site and passively cooled; natural cross-ventilation is one of the project’s central goals. The villa interiors are carefully detailed, while the pool at the Pacific Beach Hotel takes inspiration from Roman baths and from the ruins of Hadrian’s Villa at Tivoli.
