Steigereiland 2.0 – passive houses are buildings of the future
Steigereiland 2.0 is FARO Architecten’s second project on Steigereiland, a district of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The residence was developed as an energy-neutral passive house guided by cradle-to-cradle thinking. Rustic elements – wooden walls, beams, and a tree trunk used structurally and decoratively – give the interior strong character. The project shows how to design a terraced house with an original, nature-conscious mood. Materials and energy were central to the design, and many components were chosen so they could be reused or returned to the material cycle later.
Steigereiland 2.0 – the focus is on wood
Following passive-house principles, a strong emphasis is placed on insulation throughout the residence. Organic insulation materials, including wood fiber and cellulose, are used alongside high-performance modern materials. The windows are triple glazed, and the doors are carefully insulated. Wood is the main building material, chosen for comfort, acoustics, beauty, and cradle-to-cradle value. The larch facade is charred according to an old Japanese technique, protecting the surface without paint or impregnation. A large tree trunk carries part of the upper floor, and the designers use natural elements such as branches and stone to enrich the interior. Pulp, boards, branches, treated timber, natural wood, and charred wood all appear in the project, adding surprise and depth.
