Building a home there may seem unnecessary, but for architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg and designer John Vugrin, it became a singular challenge. Completing this modern residence took more than a decade.

The California Desert House was built for artist Bev Doolittle and her husband. The owners wanted a unique and spectacular retreat, and the result is an undisputed architectural landmark: an exclusive, ultra-modern home in the California desert. The futuristic structure has been valued at around $3 million.

In some ways it recalls the homes from "The Flintstones", but in a much more modern way. Life in the desert, of course, is not as difficult as it may seem. Set at the edge of California’s desert landscape, the house resembles a prehistoric creature in deep sleep, or the exposed skeleton of a giant dinosaur. A short distance from Joshua Tree National Park, the contemporary residence hides an attractive, ultra-modern living environment behind ribbed cast-concrete panels, sheltered from the harsh setting.

Among the unusual interior details is an "umbrella" over the dining room, made from 800 pieces of frosted glass. In the bedroom, a bronze sink at the foot of the bed becomes an absolute highlight.
