"Next to the Chapel" is a modern house built in a small village above Sterzing, 1,400 meters above sea level. Bergmeisterwolf architekten created the new holiday residence after an old farmhouse on the site was demolished. Together with the historic chapel nearby, the house forms a small ensemble overlooking the mountain landscape.

A living space, sauna, garage, and henhouse were inserted into the landscape without changing the topography. They are separated by function, form, and material, yet their placement makes them read as one ensemble.
Modern holiday home with picturesque views of the valley
The architects worked with traditional local materials and remnants of the old farm, including the stone wall and the chapel’s roof shingles. The old stone wall became the starting point for the project. After a long search, the architects found craftspeople able to rebuild it without mortar, following traditional methods.
Sauna with a green roof
The house is clad in shingles that had been exposed to wind and weather so they would develop a silvery tone. Simple materials such as concrete, glass, steel, and wood define the interior. Old materials were reused and combined with new ones.
The shingles, stone wall and glass
A sauna was also built near the house. The simple box is finished with earth-colored exterior plaster and planted with a green roof. Its terrace is covered yet open, offering a magnificent view of the valley. On the other side, the garage appears as an almost black volume set against the tree-filled landscape. Together, the buildings bring architecture, landscape, and art into dialogue.
