MARS Architects developed the Water Bench in connection with the BMW Guggenheim Lab as an innovative piece of urban furniture. The designer bench combines public seating with rainwater collection, turning a familiar street element into a small piece of green infrastructure. Its upholstered form recalls a traditional Chesterfield sofa, giving public space the relaxed feeling of an outdoor lounge.
A Designer Bench Inspired by Originality and Function
The Water Bench is an adaptable modular system designed to collect rainwater and reuse it for nearby planting. In this way, parks and public spaces can reduce their dependence on tap water while staying usable after rain. The concept responds to the need for more sustainable urban landscapes and shows how everyday furniture can support greener cities.
Structure of the Functional Designer Bench
The bench is made from recycled polyethylene and has a tufted surface that channels water into storage tanks below. Because the grooves direct water away from the seating area, the surface can dry quickly and remain comfortable. The Water Bench has been developed in different storage capacities, including versions for 500, 1000, and 1800 liters, making it suitable for gardens, playgrounds, parks, and other public spaces. Early prototypes were tested in Mumbai, where the benches helped irrigate surrounding green areas.
