Balnearn Boathouse on Loch Tay in Scotland has a dramatic presence that feels almost cinematic. Designed by McKenzie Strickland Associates, the small boathouse on the lake combines a quiet timber form with a hidden, adventure-ready space below.

The project received a RIBA Award in 2010. Its James Bond-like idea lies in the way the building conceals an artificial cave where a boat can be drawn in and lifted with an electric winch. From the shore, the structure appears modest and carefully fitted into the landscape; from the water, it reveals a more playful side.
A Boathouse For Leisure And Adventure On The Water
Floating above the water, the boathouse on the lake feels like an organic extension of the shore. Cedar cladding gives the building warmth, while glass and steel details keep the form light and contemporary.
The living space is placed above the boat cave. It is bright and compact, with a kitchen, shower room, and sleeping area arranged within the small volume. Slender steel columns help support the roof and strengthen the impression that the building is hovering over the lake.
