31/01/2014 – The Number 6 is the redevelopment of Palazzo Valperga Galleani in Turin, carried out by Gruppo Building. The Baroque palace is one of Piedmont’s historic architectural gems, and the project combines restoration, residential use, home technology, elegance and public art.
The renovation returned the building to a prestigious residential vocation after a century of changes that had obscured much of its original character. The project sought to respect the historic fabric while opening the private courtyard more generously to the city.
The intervention created 36 apartments while keeping the relationship with the original design and the historic elements legible. Contemporary technical solutions were integrated without erasing the building’s layered history.
The client also wanted a set of artworks created specifically for the architecture, with public-facing spaces that could be experienced by visitors. Artist Richi Ferrero developed a path of installations that reinterprets the memory of the lost Baroque garden through light, stone, planting and suspended sculptural elements.
In the courtyard on Via Alfieri, the idea of the original garden is translated both horizontally and vertically. Ferrero’s luminous tree and garden references renew the sense of wonder attached to the palace, connecting contemporary art with the memory of the site.
