25/06/2014 – Set in the garden of another residence near Okazaki, Japan, House in Chiharada is a tower-like house without corridors, created by Miho Iwatsuki and Kentaro Kurihara of Studio Velocity.
The white cylindrical volume contains five different staircases connecting the two levels. On the upper floor, a large circular room contains the family spaces, which are divided by four volumes of different proportions.
There are no hallways: each box contains a staircase leading to a bedroom on the ground floor, while another staircase leads to the bathroom and toilet. The wooden doors curve inward, and the windows cut openings to the outside while bringing in natural light.
Miho Iwatsuki explains the innovative concept as a nesting of individual rooms in which the boundaries between inside and outside, upper and lower levels, and the hierarchy between first and second floor disappear, allowing functions and decorations to mix.
