An Italian designer found inspiration for his new lighting collection in Chinese art. The pendant light design is made from modern materials, but its form is reminiscent of Chinese lanterns.

At first glance, the pendant lamp design by Italian designer Matteo Ugolini delights with a simple, minimalist metal structure. On closer inspection, the lamp reveals a quiet beauty in an Asian style. The lamps seem to float in the air. The pendant is reminiscent of the structure of Chinese lanterns. The design, called Cell, has a simple construction: a metal frame surrounds the linen-covered lamp. A small tassel complements the overall look.

Chinese lanterns, also known as Kongming lanterns, were invented more than 2,000 years ago. According to tradition, they were created out of necessity when a leader wanted to send a signal for help. Since then, the lanterns have had many uses in China, and they are often lit for family celebrations such as weddings. These lanterns also carry a significant fire risk and are banned in many European countries.
