Cedarvale Ravine is a modern house on the outskirts of Toronto, Canada, and it combines contemporary architectural forms with natural materials. Designed by Drew Mandel Architects, it is composed of glass cube modules and clean, solid volumes.

A modern house should fit organically into its environment. This was not a problem for architect Drew Mandel. Surrounded by trees, the family house reflects the atmosphere of the region.
Modern house with roof garden and an outdoor pool
The first residential floor has an open plan that includes a living room with comfortable seating in warm orange tones, a kitchen, and a dining room with double-height ceilings. Walnut paneling on the walls, floor, and ceiling creates a natural atmosphere, while the glossy finish adds a touch of grandeur and luxury. Drew Mandel Architects’ concept for the modern house also extends to the attractive landscaping. The living quarters on the second level offer a beautiful view of the park, and the building volume appears to hover above the outdoor pool. To achieve this effect, the architects built a solid concrete wall.
Pretty flat roof house offers comfort and is perfect for family life
Private second-floor spaces can be opened through floor-to-ceiling glass elements across the width of the sliding doors. The interior is spacious and well organized, with decorative excess deliberately avoided. The house has a vegetable garden, outdoor swimming pool, barbecue facilities, and a light-filled living room framed by floor-to-ceiling glass. Stone-look facade elements emphasize the link with nature. Cedarvale Ravine is certainly a good example of a modern house in a natural setting.
