30/11/2011 – Whether it is a garage, a church, or an old disused water tower, a conversion project by Zecc Architects always manages to surprise. Almost all of these homes are located in Utrecht, where elements of the city’s cultural heritage are reused and transformed into residences.
One of the best-known projects is Residential Church XL , which transformed the old Catholic church of St. Jakobus, deconsecrated in 1991 and later used as an antique-furniture showroom, into a spacious and unusual home.
A play of mezzanines creates enough space to accommodate all the functions of a dwelling. The modern volume is completely detached from the original shell and is treated as a temporary resident inside the historic church.
