Mirror House is located in Almere, the Netherlands, and was created as part of De Eenvoud, an architecture and construction initiative by Anouk Vogel and Johan Selbing in 2013. Twelve winning teams were given the opportunity to realize their design ideas. Set within the new experimental forest development of Noorderplassen West, Mirror House almost disappears into its surroundings. Thanks to reflective windows and glass panels, this modern house with a flat roof by Selbing is visible only at second glance, as the facade blends into the environment.
Mirror House – a modern flat-roof house that blends into its surroundings
Amsterdam-based Selbing created a glass building that reflects the surrounding landscape and blurs the contrast between nature and contemporary architecture. Only the discreet entrance interrupts the mirrored glass facade. This modern flat roof house offers a comfortable living area of 120 m2 on a single residential level.
The house has a rectangular floor plan and a reflective glass facade
The cladding acts as camouflage while giving the residents a feeling of privacy and security. The building is functional and compact, yet flexible enough to adapt to different lifestyles. Its slightly elevated site opens up wonderful views of the forest landscape. Equipped with sliding glass doors, the modern flat-roof house opens across its full width to the outdoors.
The glass facade creates beautiful reflections of light
Inside, the building is simple and clean. The interior walls are clad in birch plywood panels, adding warmth and comfort to the restrained space. The horizontal lines along the walls visually stretch the rooms, making the house appear longer than it really is.
