Few late-summer flowers are as spectacular in the garden as dahlias. These tuberous plants are among the most beautiful summer bloomers, with chrysanthemum-like flowers in a wide range of warm colors. Depending on the variety, the blooms can reach 5-30 cm in diameter. Although dahlias are native to Mexico, they thrive in many summer climates. Today we are sharing some valuable dahlia tips for planting, care, and overwintering.
Tips for planting dahlias
Late April to early May is the best time to plant dahlias, once frost is no longer penetrating the soil. Plant the tubers in a sunny spot, spacing them about 75 cm apart and setting them not too deep in the ground. Dahlias prefer sandy, slightly acidic soil and do not tolerate heavy clay. Many specialists recommend soaking the tubers in water for two days before planting.
Tips for caring for dahlias
Dahlias need regular watering, preferably in the early morning or evening, because wet leaves can burn quickly in strong sun. Stop watering heavily near the end of September so the tubers can prepare for winter storage. Fertilizer is best added directly to the planting hole or to the flower bed in spring. Horn shavings are suitable; horse manure is not recommended because it can encourage long, thin shoots and excessive foliage. Remove dead flowers regularly to keep dahlias blooming for as long as possible.
Overwintering dahlias
After the first frost, carefully dig up the tubers so they are not damaged. Cut the stems back to about 6 cm above the tuber, but do not tie the stems closed. Leave some soil on the tubers, as it helps protect them from drying out during winter. Store them in a ventilated place, for example in sawdust or sand, and never in plastic. Dahlias are propagated by dividing the tubers.
