There are essentially two ways to produce compost yourself. The first is the so-called cold compost pile. You simply collect organic materials such as fruit peels, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and eggshells in a compost pile. In one year, compost will slowly form. The second option is particularly suitable for the hot summer months. You can use the warm weather and produce compost in one to three months. Four conditions must be fulfilled here: nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water and air. The combination of these elements supports useful microorganisms.

Making a compost pile yourself – how to compost

To carry out hot composting effectively, build a compost pile at least one meter high. The compost pile should consist of even 10cm-20cm thick layers. Place one layer of kitchen waste / egg shells, fruit, vegetables, coffee / and one layer of dry material / autumn leaves, paper, sawdust /. In the summer months, it is important to spray the pile with water. Be careful, because too much water can cause the pile to rot. To avoid this and manage it properly, measure the temperature regularly or check the heat of the pile with your hand. If the temperature is between 55-65 degrees, or the center of the pile is hot, you can turn the pile. At this point, the different layers have already done their job, and you can keep moving the pile. Turn the pile once a week until the compost is no longer warm but brown, crumbly and dry. At this point, it is ready and can be used as fertilizer for the garden, just in time for fall and winter.
