Herbst Architects took on a challenging commission: a luxurious design for an exotic wooden house. The site was already filled with mature pohutukawa trees, and the house was named for them. Under Pohutukawa is located in Piha, New Zealand. The project was aptly named because these magnificent trees directly shaped the design of this luxury home in exotic wood.

Not wanting to destroy the beautiful trees, Herbst Architects decided to integrate them into the building. In fact, this house is a celebration of wood in general, not only of the surrounding forest. It feels almost like a shrine to timber and woodwork. Nearly every part of Under Pohutukawa refers back to wood. At the same time, the interior makes a clear reference to the current trend for industrial design. This luxury villa in exotic wood is simply outstanding. The raised frame and glass inserts provide excellent views of the natural surroundings and the sky. Despite the impressive scale of this exotic wood luxury home, the natural wood elements keep the house friendly and inviting. Wooden structures, works of art, and handmade wood details demonstrate the versatility of wood as a creative medium.

This is created largely by the strong relationship between natural wooden forms, meaning the living trees, and the house itself. Interior Design

These features include floor-to-ceiling geometric cladding made from very dark carved wood. The detail creates a beautiful design statement on the wall and draws attention to the full height of the living space in this luxury home in exotic wood. The network of wooden structures is precise and square, referring to mass production and industry. This support system brings the design together and casts moving shadows across the space. To create more private areas in the main part of the house, shelves and decorative walls define separate zones for sleeping, relaxing, and working.
