Takashi Kobayashi is a self-taught carpenter, architect and designer who has already left his mark on more than 120 tree houses throughout Japan, along with traces of traditional Japanese architecture. Clearly, building tree houses is his favorite activity . Kobayashi and his team, known as Treehouse People, use patented metal fittings in their projects and repeatedly try to overcome the boundary between people and nature. His first tree house was built in 1993 in Harajuku, Japan, and is used as a social meeting place and cafe.

To build a tree house that can balance among tree branches, the team developed several methods for sustainable construction. These fixed structures should not stop the growth of the tree. Kobayashi’s lush, colorful tree houses bring joy to children and offer a life away from the rush of everyday routines, as an alternative to ordinary living.

Sustainable construction based on the Japanese model

Japan is a very green country; nearly 67% of its territory is covered by forests. A lesser-known fact is that almost 40% of these forests are planted. The number of volunteers planting trees is decreasing rapidly, while more people seek refuge in mountainous regions. With the advance of agriculture, forests and natural habitats are rapidly disappearing. Takashi Kobayashi wanted to draw attention to ecological problems. At the same time, building a tree house became a form of entertainment for the talented architect.
