Bangkok: The Old Market Library TWIN Tegnestue

07/08/2012 – Architecture, which brings long-lasting use of recycled materials to life of a collective work and the construction itself within the local community. Thus was born the library of the Old market in Min Buri in Bangkok. Completed in 2009, in just three months the project was in the work of the Norwegian studio TYIN Tegnestue.

TYIN Tegnestue is a non-profit organization, founded by the initiative of the faculty of Science and Technology of the Norwegian University. Funded by more than 60 companies, Norwegian, as well as by various private contributions, the organization TYIN tried to help them, through sustainable architecture. Helping people in trouble, ecologically and socially.
The library of the Old market is the Norwegian group's second project in Thailand, according to the "butterfly shacks" built to house the orphans in Thailand.

The new library Min Buri is located in an old building, a time for the market, which was taken at the end of the 90s, due to a fire. The intervention of TYIN allows for the processing with the result of the restoration of a zone which had after the fire, turned into slums.

An important aspect of the build process refers to the use of local materials and in a good part of the recovery, which have enabled the project to be made at a very low price: the old crates to shelves, lining and walls made of old wooden planks second-hand all recovered in the vicinity.

Everything else is secondary to the choice of materials, the selection and involvement of the local population in the process of construction was in cooperation with the property that is rebuilt in this way, a collective identity in the past, in the mass, often on the sample.

It was in order to solve the problem of floods, which often affect the areas and floors. In this way, the library has been made available, in the course of the year.
The height of the volume allows the creation of a mezzanine, sharing a quiet location for recreation and the playback of a dynamic step in which one moves between the spokes on the search of texts.
It was not a burden on the volume of existing, a self-supporting structure made of wood in the walls of the ancient building. In this way it was possible, the consolidation of work would have to have much higher costs. The loft area has expanded usable spaces.
The result is a new space that is sustainable like the original, but above all, a friendly atmosphere for both children and adults.
