Architizer, the online network for architects, presents the A+ Awards each year. Overall 87 projects were honored in 52 categories. A temporary architectural installation by Studio 8 1/2 also won the public vote. The installation is a small art library with comfortable seating, chairs, shelving, magazines, newspapers, and a computer with a rich multimedia archive and detailed videos about contemporary artists.
Temporary Architecture Installation in a Historic Building
The temporary architecture installation occupies the largest and most important room of an old Turkish bath in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The bath is a unique sixteenth-century monument built over an even older Roman bath. The library sits in the center, directly beneath the dome, and a wooden stair structure completes the idea. Visually, the composition turns around the center and draws the eye up toward the dome.
Award-Winning Temporary Architectural Installation
The two levels for reading and storing books are treated differently. The entire library is built of wood, left with its natural appearance. The budget (€ 1,500) was not an obstacle for the design studio, but a challenge. New lighting was added to emphasize the desired atmosphere and to highlight the building’s main elements, including the wall niches and domed ceiling.
The main objective was to create a contrast between old and new: layers of plaster and brick on the walls and ceiling set against the warmth of natural wood. The entire installation of temporary architecture was created with great respect for its setting; without that context, the effect would not be nearly as expressive.
