Casa HS: A Great View on Sugar Loaf and Rio

26/10/2012 – Studio Arthur Casas transformed a penthouse in Urca, one of Rio de Janeiro’s most spectacular neighborhoods, with views of Guanabara Bay, Sugarloaf Mountain and Corcovado.

The client, an art lover, wanted to turn a damaged 1960s property into a modern home open to the city and the landscape. The renovation reorganized the apartment across three floors, bringing in more light and creating a clearer spatial sequence.

The project removes visual barriers wherever possible. Interiors are full of natural light, with terraces and sliding glass doors that extend the rooms toward the view and bring fresh air deep into the plan.

A new upper floor made the residence a triplex and created a stronger connection between interior and exterior spaces. The staircase and atrium bring light through the center of the home, while the pool and terrace areas frame the surrounding landscape.

Brazilian design and art play an important role, connecting the modern architecture to local culture. On the upper level, water, glass and reflection create one of the most striking moments of the house.
