The Year of the Wood Horse began on January 31, 2014, and is often associated with movement, energy, and adventure. Right on cue, the Philippines-based artist and sculptor James Doran-Webb presented his latest creations – the horse sculptures in breathtaking life size, handmade from driftwood.
Wood sculptures of horses

Before starting a full-size piece, Doran-Webb creates a miniature driftwood version. He chooses each piece of wood carefully so it responds to the "needs" of the sculpture. Webb has an enviable collection of driftwood, and beneath the understated elegance and muscles of each wooden horse is a solid stainless-steel frame.

The life-size horse sculptures "Mare at Canter" and "Foal at Canter" are designed in the same proportions and can be displayed together as one artistic composition or separately. The driftwood makes the forms look organic, with strong muscles and a sense of movement.

The horse was a fitting symbol for the year. In Chinese astrology, it is associated with confidence, self-satisfaction, and a thirst for action and movement. In Western imagery, the horse often personifies elegance, finesse, and strength. James Doran-Webb presents a wide collection of animal sculptures, all made in sculptural driftwood form. His popularity continues to grow, and his extraordinary works have been exhibited in galleries in England and Scotland.
