Few things are more confusing in a garden than trying to remember where every seedling, herb or flower has been planted. DIY plant labels solve the problem quickly, and they can be inexpensive, practical and decorative. There are plenty of materials and styles to choose from, depending on the look of your garden.

Before choosing a material, think about how long the label needs to last. Some markers are perfect for a single season, while others can stay outdoors for years. Indoor plant markers are less exposed to moisture and sun, but labels for garden beds need to withstand rain, heat and soil.

Use wooden stakes or craft sticks for simple houseplant labels. They are affordable and easy to find, and you can write the plant name directly on them with a marker. Clear plastic lids can also be cut into small labels with a sharp knife.

Permanent markers work well on non-porous and semi-porous surfaces such as stone and plastic. The writing can fade over time, especially in direct sunlight and high humidity, so a protective coating is useful for labels that will stay outside.
Painted stones

You can also paint small stones with simple images or plant names. Choose large, flat stones and write on them with a permanent marker or paint pen. A clear protective coat helps them keep their color for many seasons. Aluminum plant labels cost a little more, but they are especially durable.
