A wooden extension

Discovered via the excellent blog Planète Déco/Lilly Rose, this wooden extension was designed to give a growing family the space their old house could no longer provide.

The owners had fallen for an 1870 millstone house and its beautiful rose-filled garden. After the birth of their fourth child, however, the house became too cramped, and they turned to architect Stéphane Beranger (DPLG) for an extension.

Known for several timber projects in Paris, Beranger designed a contemporary wing that is generous, open to the garden, and filled with natural light.

The connection between the original house and the new extension was made by opening the wall of the former kitchen. With a total area of 70 m², the new wing contains a living room and a master suite with a shower room and toilet.

The kitchen now acts as the hinge between the existing house, the barn, and the new volume. White lacquered cabinetry keeps the space bright, while views toward the sunken garden draw the eye through to the new living room.

The extension is bathed in daylight thanks to windows placed on several facades.

The living room is deliberately lightly furnished, allowing easy movement through the new space. More visible timber detailing around the windows would have brought even greater harmony to the whole, but the result remains calm and spacious.

The bedroom opens directly onto the garden, giving the parents both independence and a fluid connection to the outdoor space.

In the end, the extension gave the family the extra room it needed, for a total cost of €270,000 including tax, labour, materials, and architect’s fees.
